Quirindi, NSW - its history and Kytherian presence

Location: 52 km southwest of Tamworth

Industry: wheat, dairy, maize, sorghum, lucerne, oats, soybeans, sunflowers, fruits, vegetables, cotton, sheep, cattle, pigs, poultry, honey

1830     first settled by George Loder

1856     first surveyed

1856     town gazetted and first land sold

1858     post office built

1866     population 250

1877     lock up built

1877     telegraph established

1878     cemetery establish and now holds over 1900 graves

1903-04 Alexandros Kominos (Alexandros Cominos) born 1866 to Georgios Kominos (Tzikli) and Ekaterina Kalligerou spent the first six months in Australia here

1904     bushfire

1908     telephone exchange established

Abt 1910 Brothers Vasilios (Vasilios Gengos)  (born 1880 to Georgios Tzetzos and Archontoula Trifli (Melita)), Evaggelinos (Evangelo Gengos) (born 1882) and Leonidas (Leonedas Gengos) (born 1884) and spent some time here aftr arriving in Australia

Abt 1911-17 Panagiotis Kominos (Veneris) (Peter Veneris) born 1895 to Nikolaos Kominos (Veneris) and Kiriaki Mavromati lived here

1911     new telephone exchange

1911     waterworks established

1911     population 2752

Abt 1912 Stratis Aronis (Theodoropoulos) (Stratis Aroney) born 1891 to Panagiotis Aronis (Theodoropoulos and Kali Tambaki) lived here for nine months.

Abt 1914-1918 Spiridon Kipriotis (Spero Keptreotis) born 1897 to Zacharias Kipriotis and Erini Glitzou spent four years here.

Abt 1915 Evaggelos Christianos (Angelo Christiano) born 1889 to Panagiotis Christianos and Martha Livaditi lived here with his wife Eleni Gerakiti born about 1899 to Panagiotis Gerakitis and Marigo Trifili for many years. He had a restaurant business in partnership with his brother Andreas.

Abt 1915 Andreas Christianos (Andrew Christiano) born 1896 to Panagiotis Christianos and Martha Livaditi lived and worked here for many years. He has a restaurant business in partnership with brother Evaggelos.

25 May 1917-19 June 1917     Panagiotis Chlentzos (Peter Hlentzos) born 1896 to Emmanouil Chlentzos and Kaliopi Georgopoulos lived in here and worked as a waiter

Abt 1918-19  Anastasios Paspalas( Archibald or Arhcis Paspala) born 1898 to Harilaos Paspalas and Dimitroula Gregi spent one year here

1919     Nikolaos Katsoulis born 1877 to Dimitrios Katoulis and Gligoria Petrogianni bought the Busy Bee Café in town. His wife Theodora Benardou born about 1873 to Spiridonas Benardos and Kanella Megalokonomou and there three children Dmitrios, Spiridonas and Grigoria spent many years here

1922     Sotiros Christianos born 1899 to Panagiotis Christianos and Matha Livaditi immigrated to Australia and went directly to Quirindi to join his brothers. He was a bootmaker and remianed in Quirindi for many years

Abt 1936 Panagiotis Kipriotis (Peter Kepreopits) born 1892 to Zacharias Kipriotis and Erini Glitzou spent four and a half years here before returning to fight for Greece in WWII

1936     bridge built over Quirindi Creek

1938     ambulance station built in remodelled council chambers
